On blessings

I love the wonderful spiritual writings of John O`Donohue, especially his series of different blessings he so beautifully expresses. All blessings are connected and associated to God; or a higher power, no matter what religion or belief one adheres to. With it come special graces that can only come from a deep spiritual source-it is a direct connection to the divine. A wish deep, loving that one has for an others-is for me is one of the most wonderful gifts that one can give an other for whom one cares for. I feel that as one dispenses blessings, one should reflect deeply on the seriousness of the intention, for otherwise they are just meaningless words, and its value is totally lost.

For the ancients, a blessing had great power and words had energy, emanating from deep within the soul. Once spoken, a blessing could not be taken back. Though one needs to be careful as words spoken in deep love or deep hate set things in motion within the human heart that can never be reversed or taken back-I strongly believe that. Yet sometimes, we use the phrase bless rather lightly- using it almost as a figure of speech everywhere. Word of blessings should be taken very seriously and spoken with reverence. One should reserve it for sacred moments  and not carelessly spoken –for I do believe that words once spoken stay forever-or rather their resonance and affects do.

I feel that giving someone a blessing should be reserved-to genuine emotions coming from the heart, for if it is not springing from honesty, genuine caring, it does not mean anything. Blessings from spirit is the most significant affirmation we can give and bestow on someone, so one should not be treating it lightly. It goes beyond offering praise or recognizing  someone’s talents, but should rather shine a light on a person’s heart and soul; and one`s love and caring for the person. One being blessed is an ongoing gift from a loving God, for whom we are conduits for. The blessings that we bestow on each other, are expressions of the blessing that rests on us for all eternity-for that is the lifespan of blessings. It is the deepest affirmation of our true self.

“For Equilibrium, a Blessing:
Like the joy of the sea coming home to shore,
May the relief of laughter rinse through your soul.
As the wind loves to call things to dance,
May your gravity by lightened by grace.
Like the dignity of moonlight restoring the earth,
May your thoughts incline with reverence and respect.
As water takes whatever shape it is in,
So free may you be about who you become.
As silence smiles on the other side of what's said,
May your sense of irony bring perspective.
As time remains free of all that it frames,
May your mind stay clear of all it names.
May your prayer of listening deepen enough
to hear in the depths the laughter of god.”
